Technetium-99m sulfur colloid

Approved Use: 
  • In adults, to assist in the:
    • localization of lymph nodes draining a primary tumor in patients with breast cancer or malignant melanoma when used with a hand-held gamma counter
    • evaluation of peritoneo-venous (LeVeen) shunt patency 
  • In adults and pediatric patients, for imaging:
    • areas of functioning reticuloendothelial cells in the liver, spleen and bone marrow 
    • studies of esophageal transit and, gastroesophageal reflux, and detection of pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents
Dose: 
  • Breast cancer or malignant melanoma setting (ADULTS): 0.1 - 1 mCi SQ
  • LeVeen shunt evaluation (ADULTS): 1 - 3 mCi intraperitoneal injection, or 0.3 - 1 mCi percutaneous transtubal injection
  • Liver/spleen imaging (ADULTS): 1 - 8 mCi IV
  • ​Liver/spleen imaging (PEDIATRIC): 0.015 - 0.075 mCi/kg IV
  • Liver/spleen imaging (NEWBORNS): 0.20 - 0.50 mCI IV
  • Bone marrow imaging (ADULTS): 3 - 12 mCi IV
  • Bone marrow imaging (PEDIATRIC): 0.03 - 0.15 mCi/kg IV
  • Gastroesophageal studies (ADULTS): 0.15 - 0.30 mCi PO
  • Gastroesophageal studies (PEDIATRIC): 0.10 - 0.30 mCi PO or nasogastric tube
  • Pulmonary aspiration studies (ADULTS): 0.30 - 0.50 mCi PO
  • Pulmonary aspiration studies (PEDIATRIC): 0.10 - 0.30 mCi PO or nasogastric tube​
